California has rolled out a pilot program allowing 1.5 million residents to add their driver’s licenses to Google Wallet. This initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to make digital identification more accessible and convenient.
Previously, Californians could only store their digital IDs in the state’s “CA DMV Wallet” app, available on both iOS and Android. With the integration of Google Wallet, users now have an additional, more widely-used platform to manage their digital IDs.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “It’s never been easier to keep a digital driver’s license and identification card in California. The state continues to work to offer convenience for those opting into the mobile driver’s license program, now with the option of using Google Wallet.”
This move follows California’s recent announcement that Apple Wallet will also support digital IDs in the near future. However, participants in the pilot program are still required to carry their physical driver’s licenses as a backup.
As digital wallets become more integrated into daily life, the expansion of services like Google Wallet to include state IDs represents a significant shift towards a more digital-first approach to identification.
